The helicopter, flown by Bill is now about to land on the platform. Cheng is running towards it. Jack is chasing him and kills two hostiles, Bill lands. Jack blows up a tank on the platform, killing two more hostiles. The flames surround the helicopter as it lands. Cheng is incapacitated. Bill gets out of the helicopter to help Jack. Jack shoots at Cheng, and demands Josh. Cheng tells him that he's too late. Bill takes Cheng, and tells Jack that they only have ten minutes before the platform is destroyed. They throw Cheng into the helicopter and take off. Jack has to go find his Dad and later grabs onto the ladder hanging from the helicopter just as the F-18's blow the platform. Jack drops off the ladder to go see Audrey and Bill takes Josh and Cheng to CTU.

I think he didn't kill him only because he believes that death for people like Cheng and himself in situations like these are a good thing in a way. He wanted Cheng to face justice. I mean, Jack already accepted death more than once. He believes it's a relief.

Yeah, he wanted to see Cheng rot in a prison for a long time, rather than having the easy way out. Not to mention the political embarrassment it will cause him

As much as I too would like to have seen Cheng go the way of the do do, his last few minutes aboard the oil rig make for some of the best podcasting we've ever done on our show.
Again, not to belabor the point of my last few posts, but there's something to be said for NOT LAUGHING inside of the last show of what was 24 42-minute segments of an action-adventure show.
The last act of that episode left me almost completely empty and fired up to talk about just what "went wrong" in that season. We did a fan feedback show after that where we talked more about the show as it ended and what could have been done differently, but I would lay most of it on repetition of plot points and perhaps getting lazy in the writing realm of things.
Maybe Jack thought he should face trail and that would be far worse than killing him! Perhaps he thought that Chang didn’t kill him so he shouldn't kill Chang, and after all Chang was well within his rights to be pi***d off with Jack because of the raid on the Chinese Embassy!

Now that I've re-watched 6 it would've made more sense to kill Cheng. Jack said the thing he wanted more than anything was Cheng. But i guess there wasn't enough time to make a good enough scene out of it.

Jack lets his father go out the easy way, but he wasn't going to let Cheng just die. Having Cheng in prison for the rest of his life would make Jack happier than letting him take the easy road out.

Didn't Cheng also have Chinese political relations? Maybe Jack learned from experience that killing Chinese politically-connected people doesn't go so well for you.

As I can't really remember but i think it's because he had Jack's nephew. He was hanging by that pole. That's only i can remember.

He had 2 chances to kill Cheng: He could have shot him while retrieving Josh the first time and then at the end. He could have at least shot off a limb or two.
