KIEFER SUTHERLAND's groundbreaking TV drama 24 is set to end after season eight - paving the way for a big screen adaptation.
The cult series, in which Sutherland stars as federal agent Jack Bauer, is currently in its seventh season.
And executive producer Howard Gordon intends to axe it after one more series - but only to enable him to make a big-budget movie version.
He says, "My hope is to go after the eighth season. That's sort of what we're aiming for. I don't think that a big-screen 24 works while Jack is on TV."
And Sutherland has warned fans not to expect a happy ending for his character.
He says, "I see Jack as a really human figure and there is something innately tragic about people. I think there is no winning. We're all going to die. There's something kind of sad in that, and yet there's something really beautiful and hopeful."

It is a bummer and not one. I had felling s8 world be the last season. This show will be the only show that I have watch so fall will have a season 8. And 24 will always be around with all kinds of fanfiction. I will miss see Kiefer on the TV but who knows maybe we will see more cartoon vones of the show on the internet.

i'll take a prequel because i'll take anything about 24, but he shouldn't die. the world needs heroes. i know some will argue he is somewhat in the anti-hero mold, and that's the trend these days. it isn't Roy Rogers anymore. but that is, in fact, what we need: people, flaws and all, as they are, doing what needs to be done to fight evil (which exists, despite the existentialists). the interesting thing is that the show often deals with just what the price is for dealing with evil. our heroes are so often shown having to make impossible choices in the pursuit of saving as many lives as possible. Jack walks the fine line about as well as one might ask, and he's ready to sacrifice his own life in the process. "No man has greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." may the true-life Jack Bauers live on to fight another day, and may the fictional ones always be around to point the way. . .

I heard in another interview it depends on on how well S7 and S8 go, and if Fox want to commision another Season and Kiefer wants to it will happen!

Though I'd like to see 24 stick around much longer, I won't be too disappointed when the series ends.
They're had a great run with 7 (so far) seasons of consistently well written, quality episodes. I haven't enjoyed a tv series so much since LaFemme Nikita on the USA Network (97-01).

Yea...I was expecting this to happen. I really do not want Jack to die in the final season though, because he's been saving lives, killing bad kids, risking his life and a lot of close people jack knows died, WTF give the dude a break!

The only thing that annoys me is what i wrote above. A series finale is supposed to be huge. Making a movie after the show almost ruins it.
How does it ruin it? For arguments sake lets say you know Jack isn't going to die at the end of season 8, he could still die at the end of the movie. And he hasn't died at the end of the last 7 seasons and they were all still huge finales lol
And you don't actually know he wont die at the end of season 8, because you don't know whether the movie will be a prequel or not.
It always sucks when a show I love ends, but them actually knowing this is the end will make the final season alot better than if they weren't sure whether they'd get picked up for season 9. So many shows set up a fantastic next season, and then they don't get picked up and you are just pissed. Getting some closure will be fantastic

man without 24 there's nothing to look forward to in the New Year each Xmas, a film would be great, 2 hours of pure, uninterrupted, action would be great, but I'm not sure if a prequel would be a good idea....but hey least they could bring back Nina/Palmer...but it would never be the same

I would like to see jack die this season. An let day 8 be a prequel based on operation nightfall. Day 1 is my favorite day an I'd love to see nightfall come to life.

To think 24 could really go on with out Jack Bauer is rediculous. It's his show, he is without question the heart and soul of the show...despite the great supporting players who have come and gone over the years, 24 is not an ensamble (ie ER) show that focuses on a group rather than one central character. Ask yourself.."Why do I watch 24?"90% will say because Jack is awesome! It will be a sad day when keifer or the producers as a whole decide its over..but over it would be.
