The only reason that I don't think this is a good idea is because users will want to use the chat box instead of posting, and many users will not post as often.

Well, I don't know. If it was somewhere where people could ignore it of they wanted too, but the people who wanted to use it had access, then it could keep everyone happy.

well its not that bad, i have one on my site, but the off topic forums are still very active, so the chatbox doesn't really cut down on the posts being made on the forum..some people dont even notice that chatbox.. but its there for fun.. you could make it displayed when you click on it, and hide when you click on it..
I think there should be a difference between a chat and a forum.
A chat could be nice for a event or when the admin expects a lot of visitors
and want to communicate in a fast manner.
Though it will be a lost of new threads and posts
